1869 | The opening of the Suez Channel in the 60's had an absolutely negative consequences for Eritrea because from then on, Eritrea become a strategically significant country for the world of commerce for it's significance at the horn of Africa. With this intent the Egyptians were the first to occupy Massawa with English support, also Keren and parts of Central Eritrea. Assab was under the control of the Italian ship owner Raffaele Rubattino at this time.
